| 5. Graphical User Interface (GUI) |
|
SimplexNumerica is primarily an MDI (Multiple-document interface) application, with the 2-D and 3-D windows, ArrayEditor window etc. contained within the parent window. MDI applications consist of a single parent window (like a desktop), and the application's client windows are contained within or float on top of the parent window.
Next picture shows the first Windows 95 version from SimplexNumerica. For me, it is nice to remember on it.
SimplexNumerica internal message queuing opens a new Windows client window sometimes automatically for you. It uses several windows for the work on an analysis contrary to most other programs with only one window. The individual tasks of an analysis are thus distributed on several windows. The client windows can be also manually opened by you. The 2-D Window is the main window under the parent window. It is always open and can not be closed without to leave the program. All other windows can be opened and closed. If one closes the 2-D Window, then one terminates the program on query.
The following windows are available (without any dialog windows):
· 2-D Windows Main window for the analysis of the 2D-Charts · 3-D Window Window for the analysis of the 3D-Graphic · ArrayEditor window Integrated array editor for x-y-z columns · Report window Output of function results and notes · Vector Graphic Window Window for Vector Graphic ·
Layout windows
The position of the windows and the desktop arrangement can be stored in the file <DESKTOP6.SYS>.
For doing this, please goto the Pulldown-menu <Settings>, <Preferences> sub-menu <Save> or use <Save As> for another file name.

The 2-D, 3-D windows and the ArrayEditor have two modes:
They are very important in SimplexNumerica’s world. You will see often in this manual dependency of it.
If the title bar of the 2-D Window you can see an identification of the mode:
< TM > Test Mode adjusted.
< EM > EvaluationMode adjusted.
Hint: All calculations take place internally in the TestMode, even if you are in the EvaluationMode!
Furthermore in the title bar:
< S0, name > In the EvaluationMode the current memory record field is indicated here. You can enter the name in the memory dialogbox under the Pulldown-menu <Edit>, sub-menu <Memory Dialog>.
< SampleData=13 > This is the number of measuring points in the single- or EvaluationMode. You can enter the number of SampleData in the ArrayEditor or when you load data from external disk.
< CurveData=800 > To change the number of CurveData goto Pulldown-menu <Functions>, <Substitute> or goto the Pulldown-menu <Settings>, <Preferences> sub-menu <Substitute>.
Each curve is part of a graph in SimplexNumerica! Each graph consists of Sample- and CurveData.

Here now some general notes for mouse clicks in SimplexNumerica’s windows:
Manually drawings in e.g. the 2-D Window are not directly possible. Do that in the special Drawing Window. 2-D Window drawing is always indirect and automatically done by the program. If you like to change for instance the colour of the chart border so you have to double click with the left mouse button on it. In the appearing dialogbox you can change the colour. If you like to change the size of the chart so you can do that with the control key plus left mouse single click on it. First it will be activated, than you can change it.
Why do I have to use the control key in combination with the mouse click instead of a single click like other programs?
Changing drawing objects should be done very rare, because you can design your chart one times and stores it as a template or evaluation. Then you can use this for math functions or data manipulations instead of painting around. For example, the selection of an object will be disturbing the hair cross during clicking around the data points on the chart.
After clicking the frame of an object, a small black small box appears on the range of the frame. If one touches the small boxes with the mouse pointer, then the physical dimensions of the framework can be shifted with mouse button press-held. If one clicks the inside of the frame and holds the left mouse button down, then the complete frame is movable. You can change the size of the chart with the mouse by clicking on the small black box on the corners.

| Toolbar | Top |
|
The Toolbar is below the Pulldown-menu. It consists of the base Icons, which will be called main functions. Click on a toolbar icon updates the icons in the left Tools Window. The Tools window icons specify some picked out functions of the Pulldown-menus. The Icons of the Tools window are changing thus in dependency of the activation of the Toolbar Icons. The Tools window is situated always on the left side of the parent window. All functions, which are caused with help of the Icons, can be caused naturally also over the Pulldown-menus or also via Shortcuts from the keyboard. The released function of the Icons from the Toolbar can be context-referred. They are depending on which windows is above. If for instance the 2-D Window is situated above and not the ArrayEditor, then the SAVE Icon shows a popup menu instead saving directly the data. That depends again on whether you are in the Test Mode or in the EvaluationMode.
Here now a short explanation of the Icons from the Toolbar upper Toolbar. Some Icons calling sub functions in the Tools Window. The functions are to be executed by clicking on an Icon in the Tools window.
Depend on the above window it can be:
· In EvaluationMode e.g. Test.D2D · In Test Mode e.g. TEST. DAT · For 3D-Graphics e.g. Net.D3D · In layout window e.g. Layout.LAY · The ArrayEditor stores e.g. DATA.CSV · The Vector drawings are stored under e.g. drawings.VEK

| Statusbar | Top |
|
The status bar is displayed at the bottom of the parent window. You can’t display or hide the status bar, it is always available.
The left text pane of the status bar describes the messages or errors of menu item functions.
The right hand panes of the status bar indicate the following information:
Two Buttons: Last function calls
K P Y X U L: Text dialogs for the charts parameter text, y-Achse1 etc. (Only active in the EvaluationMode)
